Stability balls- also called exercise balls- are one of the hottest workout items on the market today. They are great for core exercises but are also excellent for stretching, balance, and toning other areas of the body. While stability balls are an excellent piece of workout equipment, they are also a common source of workout-related injuries. Avoiding injuries while using a stability ball is possible when proper precautions are taken.

1. Use the stability ball on a non-slippery, flat surface. Stability balls that slip out from under you while you're exercising can cause severe injury. To avoid this, always use a stability ball on a non-slippery surface like an exercise mat or carpet. You can also prop a stability ball up against a wall to provide a more secure surface.

2. Ensure it's always properly inflated. Balls that are underinflated can lead to improper alignment of the body during exercise which can, in turn, lead to injury. Always check that your stability ball is properly inflated prior to exercising. To test it, push your hand against the ball. If it only has a slight give to it, the ball is properly inflated.

3. Use one that is appropriately-sized for your height and weight. Smaller stability balls cannot withstand a lot of weight and therefore can pop while they are being used. This can lead to injuries- some of which can be severe like concussions or back injuries. If you are going to be sitting on the stability ball, it should be a large ball that is very sturdy that can withstand your full weight. Most stability balls have a height and weight limit listed on the packaging.

4. Patch any holes immediately. Stability balls are made from materials like plastic that can be punctured when it encounters sharp objects. If your stability ball has a hole in it, immediately patch it or discard the ball in the trash. Many stability balls come with a patch kit that can be applied directly to the hole. Holes that are not patched can lead to improperly inflated balls or the ball can even pop.

As with any type of exercise equipment, always consult with your physician before using it to see if it's right for you. They are a great piece of workout equipment to have in your home gym. We have several available for purchase on our website.
